Après mes Gérards 2008, il est grand temps de parler des choses que j'ai aimés cette année. Voici donc mon top 10 2008 avec la playlist qui va avec. Dans quelques jours, vous pourrez découvrir le classement complet...

1 – SECRET CHIEFS 3 : xaphan : book of angels vol.9

Trey Spruance s'acqoquine à sa sauce les compositions de John Zorn et nous offre un disque délirant et jubilatoire où s'entrecroise musque orientale, surf rock, western spaghetti, drone, jazz et électro dans un bordel totalement maîtrisé. Spruance confirme ici qu'il est l'un des musiciens les plus intéressents de ces 15 dernières années.

2 – PORTISHEAD : third

Retour gagnant de la bande à Beth Gibbons avec un album novateur, sombre et magistral. Le groupe s'éloigne du trip hop pour des atmosphères proches de l'indus et du krautrock.

3 – BAR KOKHBA : lucifer : book of angels vol.10

Ce n°9 volume des "book of angels" était sûrement celui qui était le plus attendu par les fans du "masada" original. Impossible d'être déçu par ce volume, très classique certes, mais interprété avec une classe folle par des musiciens très inspirés.

4 -THE BLACK KEYS : attack & release

Après un décevant "the magic potion", le duo revient en forme avec 11 pépites rock efficaces et instantanées. Pour la première fois, le duo a eu la bonne idée d'enrichir leur son guitare/batterie en utilisant des flûtes, piano et en invitant d'autres musiciens comme par exemple Marc Ribot (Bar Kokhba, Tom Waits), venu poser quelques solos fort bien sentis.

5 - MATT ELLIOTT : howling songs

Le leader de Third Eye Foundation clôt sa trilogie folk en accentuant les rythmes balkaniques et propose ici quelque chose d'encore plus déchirant en jouant notamment sur les distorsions des guitares. Poignant !

6 - EZ3KIEL - battlefield

Virage rock indus pour l'ex trio devenu quatuor. Onirique, apocalyptique et mélancolique, Ez3kiel surprend et continue sa mue. Le meilleur album à ce ce jour de la formation française actuellement la plus fascinante.

Une rencontre musicale autour du balafon et du vibraphone pour un disque original, enivrant et chaleureux

8 - THE SOULJAZZ ORCHESTRA - manifesto

La formation de Vancouver corrige les défauts de ses précédents album (une production trop lisse et les incursions latinos un peu malvenues) et balance un brûlot afro-beat remplit de mélodies contagieuses. The Souljazz s'impose avec ce troisième album comme chef de fil de la nouvelle scène afro-beat.

9 - FERN KNIGHT - s/t

De l'acide folk de toute beauté, mélancolique et psychédélique
